How to Pick A Dog

Updated: Nov 30, 2020

What is the Right Breed for Me?

Finding Your FUR Ever Friend At Red Dirt K9s Doodles and Poodles

Maybe the wife and kids have been begging for months to add a new family member to your household, and now you find yourself actually considering it and Googling “What is the best breed of dog” and now you may be overwhelmed. There are so many options when it comes to picking the breed that is right for you.

First things first, let’s take a look at your environment.

Do you live in an apartment? Do you live out in the country? Do you have a tall fence?

Next, what kinds of lifestyle do you have?

Do you spend your time on the couch with rom-coms? Do you like to hike the great outdoors?

There are 3 main size categories with dogs: small, medium, and large.

Small breed puppies like yorkies, terriers, Pomeranians, chihuahuas, and your high fashioned mixed breeds require a safe environment. They can't run free, they need the safety of a home or their humans close by. Small dogs can be killed easily by hawks and coyotes, they require a certain level of protection and responsibility from their humans.

Medium sized dogs, such as Australian shepherds, Brittany spaniels, many types of hunting dogs, and others have more durability. They can take adventures alone and still be able to protect themselves from a predator.

Large dogs, such as a Red Dirt K9s Poodle or Doodle, bring a lot of cool factors. They are great companions to workout with and have a larger endurance. Some larger dogs offer a great sense of protection. They may not be able to hurt a fly, but the larger size is intimidating to a potential thief.

So why do we love a Poodle?

Poodles are non-shedding, but please do not be fooled to think they are hypoallergenic. Hypoallergenic is not REAL term when it comes to dogs. All dogs shed, but with poodles, there is a lot less shedding. Our farm dog, a mini-Aussie, is one shedding little girl. A couple of times a year she leaves hair everywhere and on everyone, the poodles on the other hand mainly just shed into the brushes while they are being groomed.

However, if you suffer from allergies, poodle breeds are a great option. We had a set of customers to bring their very allergic girl to visit un on the farm. Both parents were expecting a severe breakout of hives and itching. We encouraged them to allow the girl to play with the puppies and dogs for half an hour to see if she had any negative reactions, but the little girl did not. That family knew right then, a poodle would find a way into their home.

Poodles come in so many beautiful colors and we believe that the color of the dog matters! Why? Because we want you LOVE and BRAG on your dog. Everyone wants the coolest dog at the dog park! If you love the look of a jet black dog, GET A JET BLACK DOG. If you love the markings and dual colors, GET A DOG WITH COLORS.

Simply stated, pick the breed of dog that fits your LIKES & LIFESTYLE.

We can't answer the question of what is right for you but we believe a doodle or poodle will find their way into your heart and be a great addition to your family.
